Location in Vancouver:

The neighborhood of ‘False Creek’ is generally regarded as the south shore flats lining the inlet off English Bay between Main street on the east, and Burrard street on the west. From the seaside it includes the property inward toward 4th / 2nd Avenue, where it borders Fairview slopes. It is a relatively new residential district in Vancouver, built on former industrial land which had sawmills, shipyards and the city’s Cambie public works yard operating on it. The transformation of this parcel of land began in the 1970s and construction has continued ever since.

Road access to and through False Creek South:

The roadways running closest to the shoreline are Lamey’s Mill Road and Moberley. One pubic bus route, the #50 False Creek South / Waterfront, carries passengers to and from this area between the city’s downtown and the major artery of Cambie St. near Broadway where many big-box stores are now located. Vancouver General Hospital is on this bus route. Other avenues of transportation move north-south along Granville, Cambie and Main Street. The major corridor for private cars, trucks and larger vehicles runs east-west along 6th Ave., (turns into 4th Ave to the west), and in the east becomes 2nd Ave around Cambie street. The three bridges, Burrard St, Granville St and Cambie St., all access the city core to the north as well as to points south. Traveling through is easy, and while parking can be a challenge, the delights of Granville Island ensure a steady flow of residents and visitors to the area year-round.

Central Attractions:

Granville Island is a charming ‘market and urban park,’ with a vibrant Farmers’ Marketplace where both fresh local and exotic imported vegetables, meat and fish can readily be found. An eclectic mix of curio shops, artists’ studios and supply shops, clothing and jewelery boutiques, bakeries and restaurants including the popular Granville Island Brewery, both large and small, ensure the continual stream of happy shoppers who flock to the area. Several theater groups are housed on the Island, as is the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. Various performance venues on the island lend themselves to music and other festivals throughout the year and street performers draw large audiences on many a sunny day. Children are very welcome on the Island, and shops like the Kids Market feature stores and amusements specifically for youngsters and their parents too. The nearby water park and lush greenery of the adjacent parkland are among the many favorite family haunts. A well-constructed stone sea wall runs around the entire island, providing a scenic promenade and opportunity for people-watching or the pleasure of taking in the kayaking and Dragon Boat racers. The waterway is a lively through fare for luxury boats and False Creek Ferries alike. Several marinas dot the area along the strand and culminate at the glittering silver Science World on the eastern shore of the Creek.

Livability Features:

The False Creek Seawall extends right along the entire south shore of False Creek. It takes the joggers, bicycle enthusiasts, mothers with strollers and Seniors with walkers past the beautiful man-made pools, ornamental gardens and flower beds which line the pathways. Sighting the baby geese in spring is truly a treat not to be missed and is special, in part, due to its presence right in the urban center. This park and seawall is maintained by the city, including Charleson Park and Stamps Landing. Besides the sensational thrills, treats and day-to-day groceries found in Granville Island, the amenities provided for the permanent residents in the neighborhood include the False Creek Elementary School and the nearby city-run community center where one may sign up for tennis, canoeing, ballroom dancing, karate, pottery, or fitness classes, among the wide array of educational and health oriented offerings. Strung out between the tourist destinations of Granville Island & environs on the west and Science world on the east, lies the neighborhood and residential housing of False Creek South.

Habitat and Housing:

‘Sustainability’ and ‘urban housing’ are the two catchwords often used to describe the area of False Creek South. It is a socially mixed-use, mixed-income residential settlement which includes clusters of modern upscale freehold condos and townhouses as well as socially conscious coop apartment housing. Also nestled amongst the greenery and integrated into this community are an Intermediate care facility and a center for young adults with disabilities. The very few detached float-homes off Granville Island are a prized rarity. Along the eastern portion of False Creek lies the  Olympic village. It is one of the latest developments in the area. Young and mature adults, affluent and educated, comprise approximately 75% of the permanent population, the remaining 25% being children and seniors. This vibrant area is home to young families as well as singles of all ages and the neighborhood continues to be a desirable and coveted place to reside within the city of Vancouver.
