Emily Carr University

Founded in 1925 and among the oldest post-secondary institutions in B.C., this long-lived art school received degree granting authority in several stages. By 2008 it was awarded university status. The Emily Carr University of Art and Design operates in several locations throughout the city.
The site in Granville Island was secured in 1980, and the rapid growth of interest from students resulted in satellite campuses at 1535 West 3rd Avenue, 1612 West 3rd Avenues, and now at 1706 West 1st Avenue in the Mitchell Press Bldg. (on the Great Northern Way campus).
Emily Carr Institute offers a variety of certificate and continuing studies courses and programs as well as the core Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts and Design. A Masters degree in Visual Arts, Media Arts, and Design is available to qualified applicants.
Approximately 2000 full time students and near 3000 part-time Continuing Studies students partake of this learning community dedicated to the Visual Arts, Media Arts, and Design.
An internationally acclaimed Faculty in the many disciplines promotes research and innovation in an ever expanding curriculum. The Faculty of Visual and Material Practice, of Culture and Community, of Design and Dynamic Media, as well as the Faculty of Graduate Studies are recent additions to the Emily Carr School.
Graduates go on to manifest lively careers as artists and designers in various fields. Some pursue further education in Universities and Art Institutes in other parts of the world, where their studies and grounding at Emily Carr University serves them well.
The vision statement, “to be a worldwide center of excellence in art, design and media education and research” holds true as an accurate description of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
The school Of course was named after the Group of Seven member Emily Carr.
