Setting in Vancouver:

The 632 hectares of land which comprise the neighborhood of Kerrisdale is bounded on the west by Blenheim Street and stretches toward Angus Drive and Granville Street on its eastern edge. To the south, the Fraser river’s North Arm forms it natural limit, while in the north, it is 41st Avenue which completes its territory. Adjacent to Kerrisdale on the west and south are the Dunbar and Southlands neighborhoods, in the east, South Granville, while Mackenzie Heights and Quilchena lie to the north. The area was first settled in the 1860s by the McCleery brothers and the 41st Ave area developed rapidly after their initial efforts.

Main Roads:

Blenheim and Granville streets, with Arbutus / West Boulevard in-between, are the north-south thoroughfares in the area. 41st Avenue runs east-west. South-west Marine Drive is a major transportation route angling east-west along the North Arm of the Fraser river.

Major attractions and amenities:

The extensive shopping center in the area around 41st Ave and West Boulevard contains many shops; both mainstream commercial and trendy unique boutiques, as well as a wide variety of restaurants and eateries, a movie theater and various public community facilities. The Kerrisdale branch of the Vancouver public library services the area as does the well endowed Community Center where adults of all ages, and children too, flock to the many programs offered throughout the year. The area is dotted with green space and the parks in the neighborhood include Arbutus park, Elm Park at 5800 Elm at 41st, Fraser River park on Angus Drive at 75th, the Kerrisdale Centennial park on Yew and 42nd Ave, Malkin on Balaclava at 44th Ave, as well as Maple Grove Park on Yew and 51st.. The McCleery Golf Course at 7188 MacDonald & West 55th Ave provide much appreciated recreational activities for the residents of this prized residential area. The namesake McCleery park is found on 6501 Marine Crescent at 49th Avenue. A number of the parks are off-leash for the dog lovers in the neighborhood.

Neighborhood, people and housing:

Kerrisdale is populated by many single – detached family dwellings amongst the clusters of both low-rise and high-rise housing options. It is a desirable and quiet, tree-lined residential area, combining modern development with its original long-standing heritage homes built before 1946. Providing very comfortable homes to approximately 600,000 persons, the inhabitants between the ages of 20 – 60 years comprise about 60% of the population in the area, with the rest split between youngsters and Golden oldsters.  This is a quiet multi-cultural district in the heart of Vancouver. The median household yearly income is approximately $62,000, with many earning well above that figure. The bulk of the adults living in this neighborhood work in the city and travel to their place of employment by car. Environmentally conscious, many folks use the well-functioning public transit opportunities.

The elegant estates and mansions along South West Marine Drive are beautiful landmarks displaying several architectural styles including Tudor Revival, Gothic, Beaux Arts and also Spanish Colonial revival. The terracing, porticoes and landscaped garden features are all are reminiscent of a gracious bygone age.
